Assinica wildlife reserve in Eeyou Istchee James Bay region

Located in northern Quebec, this wildlife reserve covers an area of 8,885 km2. Available in primitive camping or canoe-camping. Explore the rivers, lakes and landscapes of Eeyou Istchee. Brook trout, lake trout, northern pike and walleye are the 4 species you can fish for. The flagship lakes of Réserve faunique Assinica are Comencho, Cachisca and Opataca. It’s a true wilderness adventure!

Assinica comes from the Asinikaw Cree word meaning “it’s stony” or “it’s rocky”. It’s the name of a lake in the Broadback River basin, which runs through the reserve.

Access

The reception station (Route 167 North) for this wildlife reserve is located on the Eeyou Istchee Baie-James territory, about 20 km north of Chibougamau and 70 km south of Mistissini.
