Mount Chaudron

Aerial view of Mont Chaudron, Rouyn-Noranda

Mont Chaudron, also known as Mont Cheminis, is an inselberg, a geological anomaly, located west of Arntfield, Quebec, just a few metres from the Ontario border.
With a height of 527 metres, this mountain, which seems to have appeared out of nowhere, is one of the highest peaks in the region.
Its formation dates back to the Ice Age.
Its shape is the result of glaciers moving around it.
It is composed mainly of sedimentary rock dating back over a billion years.
You can see it by driving west from Rouyn-Noranda, or from various viewpoints and hills in the city, such as the Opasatica and Lac Beauchastel trails.
It can be reached by unmarked trails, but is best observed at its base. Climbing at your own risk is not recommended, as it is very dangerous.
