The Récré-O-Parc de Ste-Catherine is located on the south shore in the town of the same name, just across from the spectacular Lachine Rapids. With 2 km of wooded banks, it’s an ideal stopover for cyclists and picnickers. There’s a small artificial lake with sandy shores. This is probably the least-known beach in the Montreal region. Yet it’s well worth the detour, with excellent water quality that’s lightly treated. There are also 7 km of paved paths for walking, cycling and in-line skating. You can watch the locks and ships of the St. Lawrence Seaway in action.
The park is located within the boundaries of the Ile aux Hérons migratory bird sanctuary, which can be seen from the shore. This island is home to over 200 Great Blue Heron nests. With a high-powered spotting scope, it’s possible to observe them. What’s more, in spring and autumn, you’ll be able to observe migratory bird gatherings.
Single kayak, double kayak and paddleboard rentals are available at the Évasio rental center. In winter, snowshoes, ice skates, sliding tubes and scooters can be rented in 2-hour blocks.
