Located in the far north of the Laurentian region, some 60 km from Mont-Laurier, Zec Mitchinamecus covers a vast territory of 846 square km. The terrain is dotted with hills, the highest of which reach 548 metres in altitude. There are over 450 lakes, 3 rivers, a reservoir and several streams.
The Mitchinamecus River is the main river in the Zec and crosses the territory from northeast to southeast. The Mitchinamecus dam creates a huge freshwater reservoir. This is the best reservoir for walleye fishing. Several lakes are open for brook trout fishing.
Popular activities at the Zec include canoeing, kayaking, wilderness camping and wildlife observation. A canoe-camping circuit with shuttle service is available, as are canoe and kayak rentals. You can also go hiking and pick wild berries (blueberries, small strawberries and raspberries) or mushrooms, which grow all over the territory. For swimming, the Zec abounds in superb beaches.
Zec Mitchinamecus offers nearly 400 primitive campsites. Most are seasonal, but a few are available for short stays at the Lac d’Argent, Maskoutain, Chat, Dempsey and Pin-Rouge campgrounds. The campsites are spread over eight sectors and located near various bodies of water.
The Zec’s name derives from the Mitchinamecus reservoir and river that crosses its territory. In the native language, Mitchinamecus means “big trout lake”.
