The 1,282-square-km territory is covered by mixed forest dominated by softwoods, with mountains and valleys, numerous watercourses including the Matane and Cap-Chat rivers, 38 lakes and several streams. It has the highest density of moose in Quebec, with 2 to 3 individuals per square kilometer. The presence of mudflats (natural mineral springs that gush out of the ground), a rare phenomenon in Quebec, makes the reserve an ideal moose habitat. An interpretation center has been dedicated to this deer. Other species include white-tailed deer, black bear, fox and small mammals. Birdlife numbers over 150 species, including bald, golden and golden eagles. For those who want to catch a fish, the reserve is developing spawning grounds, dikes and trails to brook trout streams.
For many years, Réserve faunique de Matane was a hunting and fishing reserve. Now, with the completion of the 1073 km International Appalachian Trail linking Mount Katahdin in Maine to Forillon National Park of Canada, outdoor enthusiasts can discover a little-explored territory. For mountain bikers, there are a number of secondary dirt and gravel roads, including Route 30, with its winding route along a river.
Activities
Guided hikes in a ravage or mudflat are available. The Étang à la truite (1.5km) and Vasière Thibeault (1km) trails have observation towers. The 2km Étang à la truite trail offers kayak tours and moose watching, with or without a guide (kayak rental available at reception).
Accommodations
Within the reserve, you’ll find designated camping areas (usually with platforms), both serviced and unserviced. There are also twenty cottages in six sectors. Each cottage is located on the shore of a lake.
