Ashuapmushuan Wildlife Reserve

Located in the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean region, between the municipality of La Doré and the town of Chibougamau, this wildlife reserve covers an area of 4,488 km2, including several rivers and no fewer than 1,200 lakes. It takes its name from its most lively river, the Ashuapmushuan.

Cruise the rivers or visit the lakes to fish. Many species of fish, including walleye and brook trout, as well as lake trout, pike, whitefish and yellow perch. In autumn, small game hunting brings connoisseurs to the forest. This is a land of freedom and pure nature, where time has little hold.

For canoeing and canoe-camping: the Ashuapmushuan River is a classic; once used by coureurs des bois and Amerindians for the fur trade. Attractions: Chaudière Falls; from Route 167, take the fork at kilometer 68 and follow the road for 20 km. Short trails provide a variety of views of the falls.

Rental service: rowboats, fishing rods, bedding, canoes, canoe-camping equipment and life jackets.

Ashuapmushuan is a Montagnais (Innu) term meaning where moose are spotted.
