Baskatong reservoir

This 400 km2 reservoir was created in 1927 with the construction of the Mercier dam. The 2,800 kilometers of sandy shoreline and almost as many beaches, as well as the fishing, have made the Baskatong reservoir famous. There are also hundreds of islands where you can camp.

Canoe-kayak

There are two launching points. Before Grand Remous, turn right on chemin Baskatong, continue to Pointe-à-David (25 km), then turn left on chemin Dam Lulam. After Grand Remous, as far as Pétro Canada, turn right on chemin du barrage mercier, then left on route number 3. Camping is possible on the reservoir islands. On weekends, there are many boaters, so the waters are less calm and the islands busier. Weekdays are a better time to go.

Fishing

The reservoir is renowned for its walleye. Pike, lake trout and landlocked salmon are also found. Permits are required for fishing, and are on sale at outfitters and at the AFC interpretation center.

There are more than twenty outfitters spread around the lake, offering a variety of services and activities. You can pick berries or mushrooms, go kayaking, pedal boating, hiking, ice fishing, snowshoeing, dog sledding and more. Many offer equipment rentals such as motorboats, pontoons and kayaks.

Community wildlife area (CWA)

Since it was founded in 1998, the Aire faunique communautaire du réservoir Baskatong has been working with the community to ensure the sustainability of the fishing resource. Seeding is one of the most important activities.

New interpretation center

The AFC offers a tour through six thematic sections that will enrich your knowledge of one of our greatest living treasures. You’ll discover the beauty and grandeur of the Baskatong reservoir, as well as the mission and actions of the corporation that manages this magnificent territory. In addition to observing live walleye at various stages of growth, you’ll get a glimpse of the fish farm and the work of its technicians.

AFC du réservoir Baskatong is located at 506, chemin Baskatong in Grand-Remous.
