Grosse Île and the Irish Memorial National Historic Site of Canada Located in the middle of the St. Lawrence River, Grosse Île served as a quarantine station for the port of Québec from 1832 to 1937.
At the time, it was the main gateway for immigrants to Canada.
At the entrance to the island, the disinfection building features a multimedia exhibition that lets you relive the major events in the island’s history.
A visit to the steam rooms, showers and waiting rooms will also give you a better understanding of the disinfection process that immigrants had to undergo at one time.
A footpath leads to the Celtic cross and memorial.
Dedicated to the memory of immigrants, station employees, sailors, doctors and priests buried on the island, the memorial is located next to the Irish cemetery.
Guided tours of the area are also available.
Nature lovers will have the chance to hike the Sentier du Mirador, a 2.5 km trail through the Grosse-Île forest, and admire the diversity of its vegetation.
Interpretation panels on rare forest plants enhance the hike.
Rest areas are also available along the trail. Cruises and sightseeing To get to Grosse-Île, Lachance Cruises offers boat transportation from Berthier-sur-Mer.
Various packages and cruises are also available.
