With a surface area of 1245 km2, the park’s territory covers the Saguenay Fjord (within the Saguenay Park) and the St. Lawrence Estuary between St-Fidèle and Les Escoumins over half its width (northern part). It includes the water, the seabed and the part of the shoreline submerged at high tide.
Since its creation in 1998, the Saguenay-St. Lawrence Marine Park has been part of the worldwide network of marine conservation areas. The fruit of concerted action, it is the first park in Quebec to preserve and enhance an exclusively marine environment. It is also the only park co-managed by both levels of government, in association with local stakeholders. The creation of this protected area was prompted by the need to protect the St. Lawrence beluga whales. From this perspective, maintaining biodiversity is at the heart of our collective concerns.
Famous for its scenic beauty, the Marine Park is also one of the best places in the world for whale watching. There are many ways to enjoy the unique Marine Park experience. Cruise aboard a bateau-mouche, inflatable or sailboat. By sea kayak, with experienced guides who know the marine environment and its riches inside out. Hike the many trails of the Réseau Découverte or the short and long hiking trails of the Parc national du Fjord-du-Saguenay. Accommodation is also offered by the latter, as the Saguenay-St. Lawrence Marine Park does not operate lodging facilities.
