Located at the northern end of Réserve faunique La Vérendrye, this river flows southwest to end its course in the Dozois reservoir. A hidden treasure for canoe-camping, this route is not the most popular. The starting point is so far away, the trip takes 6 days or more, and there are several portages for the strongest R3 and R4 rapids.
Rated advanced, the Rivière Chochocouane circuit totals over 60 km. It starts either at the Camitakit stream bridge or at Lac Cambrai. The Lac Cambrai start adds 16 km to the circuit. The complete circuit, a 138 km loop, can take ten days or more to return to the starting point. The route is rated advanced to expert, and is not recommended for high water.
These canoe-camping circuits take you through a wilderness of waterfalls and rapids. They include campsites at intervals ranging from 5 to 10 km. Portages are equipped and in fairly good condition. For whitewater enthusiasts, there are several rapids to cross.
