Beauharnois Canal
Description
Located in the Beauharnois-Salaberry Regional Park, the bike path runs along both banks of the Beauharnois Canal for a total distance of 50 km.
Whether you cycle on the west or east side of the canal, the paved trails are largely free of motorized traffic, passing through marshes and agricultural fields, all the while criss-crossing the waters of the canal.
The beauty of the landscape, the silence and nature make you forget that the big city is just around the corner.
The route is embellished by numerous observation and interpretation points accessible on foot, by bike or even by car, all within a short distance of the Park’s parking areas.
On the west side of the island, the bike path is cut off from Valleyfield by the Port of Valleyfield and the highway.
On the east side, the bike path runs 26 km from Beauharnois to the tip of Hungry Bay, at the mouth of Lake Saint-François.
Parking is available near the Larocque and Saint-Louis bridges, at the hydroelectric power station interpretation center between the Alcan plant and the power station dam in Beauharnois, and at the Musée québécois d’archéologie.
Please note that the Larocque and Saint-Louis bridges are not accessible to cyclists.
The only way to cross the canal by bike is via the bridge-tunnel on Route 132 in Beauharnois.
So it’s not possible to make a loop.
During the summer season, a river shuttle between the Beauharnois Canal (east), Valleyfield and Les Coteaux connects the Soulange bike path to the Beauharnois-Salaberry regional park networks; see: Valleyfield shuttle service.
In addition, a section of the Route verte, passing through various streets and bike paths, also links the two towns.
A variety of loop circuits ranging from 15 to 65 km are available.
Longer hikers can also combine the canal route (east) with a road circuit to the south, and take the Cyclo-nature regional park bike path between the towns of Ormston, Ste-Martine and Beauharnois.
