Certified hiking trail

A new rectangular logo, bearing the words “certified 2011”, can be seen on some of Quebec’s hiking trail signs. The purpose of the sign is to let hikers know that this network of trails meets the quality standards set by the Fédération québécoise de la marche (FQM). To date, 22 trail managers have obtained Pedestrian Network Certification, following an incognito inspection carried out by an FQM volunteer. Inspectors evaluate trails according to some 30 criteria, such as minimum trail width, structure of reception, frequency of markers, presence of parking and quality of maps provided.

Certification meets two objectives: to standardize trail development and to help managers meet the needs of the public. It’s also a promotional tool, confirming the quality of these trails. It is not mandatory, and national parks, which already have their own standards, are not covered by this voluntary program.
