Located less than 45 minutes from the town of Alma, this vast territory of 1,491 km² is part of the Canadian Shield. It is characterized by a relief of hills and slopes cut by narrow valleys, with sometimes very steep sides, especially in the center of the area. There are over 600 lakes, many of them large. Some 80 lakes are over 20 hectares in size. You’ll have easy access to all of them, thanks to 17 boat ramps like the one at the magnificent Lac aux Grandes Pointes. You’ll enjoy a wide variety of fishing opportunities, mainly for brook trout, but also for walleye, pike and lake trout.
The Zec des Passes landscape is dotted with several rivers. Some are exceptional, like the Petite rivière Péribonka and the rivière Alex. These offer walleye and brook trout fishing. Fishing enthusiasts equipped with SUVs will have access to more difficult sectors where native trout (brook trout) are found isolated at high altitude.
Activities
The Zec des Passes is a canoeing paradise! Either on one of the many rivers or on the large and small lakes criss-crossing the magnificent mountain valleys. Our favorite is undoubtedly the magnificent Petite rivière Péribonka. This magnificent waterway is often compared to the Bonaventure and Sainte-Marguerite rivers, by the canoeists who frequent it. A portion of the Alex River is very popular with experienced whitewater canoeists and kayakers.
A linear hiking trail of over 1.5 km will appeal to families, hikers and anglers alike. The trail begins at the Rivière Alex bridge at kilometer 22, 1.5 km from Chemin des Passes in the Brûlé sector. The trail features fishing sites, rest areas and interpretation panels. It offers a unique forest landscape in the heart of the boreal forest. From August to September, you can pick blueberries (nicknamed the “blue pearl”). From late July to August, you’ll also find raspberries. Throughout the season, mycology enthusiasts can go in search of wild mushrooms.
