The Bonaventure River rises at Lac Bonaventure in the Appalachian Mountains and flows 127 km downstream into the Baie-des-Chaleurs. The Micmac word for Bonaventure River is “ouagamet”, meaning “clear water”. Considered one of the clearest in the world, its water is a crystalline emerald-green color. Its purity is said to be due to the presence of calcareous rock, the calcite remaining suspended in the water and reflecting the light.
By canoe or kayak, the entire river trip takes 6 days and 7 nights. Departures and arrivals can be at different locations. In three days, you can descend either the first 67 km, which require more expedition knowledge, or the last 60 km, which are ideal for a family expedition. Outings of one day or less are also possible. The river is accessible via 150 km of forest roads. Cime Aventure offers a shuttle service. Boats and equipment can also be rented, and guides are available.
