Lachine Canal National Historic Site

View of the Lachine Canal and a cyclist on the bike path

Located in the southwest of Montreal, the Lachine Canal was opened in 1825 to avoid the rapids of the same name on the St. Lawrence River. It is renowned, among other things, for its 14 km bicycle path between the Old Port and Lake Saint-Louis. Here you’ll discover a verdant urban park, a waterway punctuated by five locks and banks lined with industrial relics. An enchanting site that welcomes millions of visitors on foot, by bike or by boat every year. Here, you can picnic, read a book or simply take the time to contemplate nature in the middle of the city.

In winter, a 13-km stretch of the Lachine Canal trail is groomed by the Parks Canada team to the delight of outdoor enthusiasts. The groomed trail is ideal for winter activities such as walking, snowshoeing and cycling on oversized tires.

Locks no. 1 and no. 2

Located in Montreal’s Old Port, they were the point of entry for ocean-going vessels into the Lachine Canal.

A well-kept secret, the quayside offers a unique landscape: bodies of water, the Farine Five Roses poster, skyscrapers, the waltz of trains coming and going.

Pôle Atwater

A must-see! Many activities and rest areas: rent a bike or a boat, or enjoy an aperitif on the Canal Lounge’s bateau-mouche.
