This deserted island is located in theLac-Saint-Pierre archipelago, near Sainte-Anne-de-Sorel.
It lies between the St. Lawrence waterway (to the north) and the Chenal des Barques (to the south).
Beware: upstream of this channel, there’s a stone dam.
In summer, during the low-water period, the shoreline on the north side (towards the river) unveils a beautiful sandy beach.
Boaters and kayakers can stop here for a break, or pitch a tent and spend the night camping in the wild.
On the other side of the waterway, the south shore of Île à la Pierre also features a few beaches when the water level is low.
Access to île des Barques is permitted, as it is owned by Transport Canada.
Other islands may look interesting, but camping is not permitted, as most are privately owned and conservation areas.
The two nearest launching points are Parc Constant-Plante, with dock and ramp for boats, and Maison du Marais (SABL), with docks for canoes and kayaks only.
