Saint-Maurice River

The Rivière St-Maurice rises in the Gouin reservoir, located at the same latitude as Lac Saint-Jean, and flows 560 kilometers into the St. Lawrence River.
From the Blanc reservoir, Windigo to the Rapide-Blanc dam, and from there to Trois-Rivière, the river is canoeable.
The trip can take from 6 to 7 days.
A few short portages allow you to cross the hydroelectric dams.
In summer, there are several beaches and small islands where you can camp.
Launching points are found all along the river, many with free parking.
You’ll be able to design your own itinerary, depending on the starting point you choose. The river’s original name was “Métabéroutin”, given by the Algonquin, meaning “wind discharge”, and the Attikamek of the Haute-Mauricie still call it “Tapiskouan Sibi”, the “needle-threaded river”.
