Presqu’île ? Barachois? Cordon dunaire? Our sandbar is made up of three islands that were once joined together. Portneuf-sur-Mer’s unique geography is the reason for the formation of the sandbar. According to some scientists, the shoal is a 4.5 km-long spit of shoreline formed by wave action. The Portneuf sandbank consists mainly of sandy beaches.
Prized by birdwatchers, it is above all the pride of the local people. Unique in its kind, it is home to many natural treasures.
More than thirty plant species, including many typical of sandy coastal environments, make the Portneuf-sur-Mer Bank an abundant larder for birds and fish. The ZICO (Zone Importante pour la Conservation des Oiseaux – Important Bird Area) on the Portneuf Bank is home to over 22 of the 53 shorebird species listed.
During migrations, the numbers of 6 of these 22 species reach and exceed the threshold of 1% of the world population. These species are: Silver Plover, Least Sandpiper, Sanderling, White-rumped Sandpiper, Semipalmated Sandpiper and Ruddy Turnstone.
