Located just under three hours from Montreal, Mount Gosford, at 1193 metres, is the highest peak in southern Quebec. It lies at the eastern end of the Eastern Townships region, on the border with Maine. At its summit, a tower exposed to the four winds provides a bird’s-eye view of the entire region. A must-see.
Mount Gosford’s vast territory boasts 40 km of hiking and snowshoeing trails, 47 km of biking trails on forest roads, over 10 km of backcountry and telemark skiing, six quality rustic huts, camping platforms and two three-sided shelters.
To reach the summit of Mount Gosford, from the reception area, take the forest road with your car for 6 km to the small parking lot on your right before the Pavillon Rose-Délima. From there, take trail #1 (red markers) for 4.2 km (600m ascent). Once at the summit, you’ll enjoy a 360-degree view of the border mountains and, on the American side, of Maine’s Mount Bigelow and New Hampshire’s Mount Washington. Return on the same trail.
Don’t forget the color season, which runs from mid-September to mid-October. Please note, however, that the territory is closed to hiking during the moose-hunting season.
