Mont-Mégantic Observatory
Located at the summit of Mont-Mégantic, at an altitude of 1110 m, the observatory boasts a 1.6 m telescope, the largest in eastern North America. Its use is reserved for professors and researchers from the Université de Montréal and Laval. However, since 1998, a new observatory, the OPMM, has been available to the public. It is operated by the ASTROLab, a museum and astronomy activity center dedicated to the public, 500 m further down the mountain.
SÉPAQ Park
The 55 km² territory is made up of several peaks, valleys, ridges and hills. These include Mont-St-Joseph and, of course, Mont-Mégantic. The latter, with its steep walls descending into a deep valley, is often reminiscent of a dormant volcano. Trails lead to the summit or to lookouts. The view extends as far as our neighbors to the south. You can see Mounts Whashington, Stokes, Sutton, Gosford, Jay Peak, Katahdin…
The Franceville area
In 2011, Parc national du Mont-Mégantic inaugurated a new sector: the Franceville sector. Visitors now have access to the majestic Ruisseau-de-la-Montagne with its waterfalls, valleys and peaks, ridges and breathtaking vistas. The magnificent campsite is housed in the yellow birch maple grove next to the mountain stream.
Activities
There are 50 km of hiking trails for beginners to advanced, 28 km for intermediate to advanced cross-country skiing, 9 km of untracked Nordic ski trails for experts, 33 km for beginners to advanced snowshoeing and 28 km for beginners to intermediate cycling.
Hosting
In the park, there are 13 sites with platforms for primitive camping, 4 prospector camps, 6 huts (2 to 10 people), 10 Huttopia tents and 7 new EXP chalets, 2 of which can accommodate up to 4 people. The Franceville sector offers 37 vehicle-accessible campsites, 16 of which are unserviced and 21 with 2 services (water and electricity). Reservations are mandatory.
