Located in the Appalachian MRC, the village of Kinnear’s Mills is known for its beautiful scenery and its four churches located at the same intersection. There are three educational walking trails to discover the history, fauna, flora and geology of the region. They are punctuated by interpretation panels, rest areas and picnic tables.
The Bailey Falls Trail, a 1.5 km loop, runs alongside Old Mill Creek. It runs exclusively on private land through mature forest. Children will undoubtedly linger with their feet in the crystal-clear water of the Bailey Falls pools.
The Osgood River Trail begins at Kinnear’s Mills Municipal Park and runs alongside the river. The route passes through wooded, riparian and agricultural areas. There are several rest areas for you to enjoy. You can follow the trail for almost 6 km, or take the shortcut for a quicker return, a 3 km walk. Some thirty artificial pools have been built along the river to promote brook trout reproduction. A fishing permit is required.
The Sentier historique, a 7.3 km trail in the forest and on the road, brings together pieces of history sketched out on interpretive panels. Remains of potash kilns and the first cemetery, the cimetière des cinq cantons, can be found here.
The Chemin de Saint-Jacques-Appalaches, a 250 km trail in the Thetford region, also passes through the village.
The village used to be called Canton de Leeds. In 1982, it was changed to Kinnear’s Mills. The name comes from a mill planted by James Kinnear. It was destroyed in June 1952 by a flash flood.
