The Grande tourbière de Villeroy is a peat archipelago of several hundred hectares covering part of the territory of the municipalities of Villeroy and Notre-Dame-de-Lourdes in the Centre-du-Québec region, and Val-Alain in the Chaudière-Appalaches region.
These are mainly public lots whose management has been delegated to the MRC de l’Érable.
Based on a recent study by Université Laval of over 600 peat bogs in southern Quebec, the Villeroy peat bog ranked 2nd in terms of conservation potential, due to its large surface area, diversity of plant habitats, and so on.
In addition to a multitude of animal and plant species that delight hunters and hikers, such as moose, partridges and blueberries, others stand out for their rarity or unusual character.
These include birds such as the Rufous-crowned Warbler and the Field Maubèche, insectivorous plants such as the Purple Sarracenia, and rare orchids such as the Fringed-throated Orchid and the Tuberous Calopogon.
In the public part of the bog and its adjacent terrestrial environment, it is now possible to enjoy hiking in a small network of trails over three kilometers long, culminating in a 1.2-kilometer boardwalk laid directly on the bog.
Open May 1 to October 15.
