Located north of Girardville, the Mistassini River flows south into Lac Saint-Jean. Some sections of the Mistassini have considerable flow, with some whitewater. The “Mistassins” canoe and kayak camping circuit is equipped with camping facilities, dry toilets and distance signs. The route starts at Chute Blanche, km 112, and ends just north of Girardville. It’s easy to paddle and accessible to all throughout the season.
The environment is semi-wild with a few cottages, which are more numerous near Girardville. There are several camping beaches in addition to those indicated. The road follows the river for most of the way, but it may be wise to ask local businesses for a shuttle service (see links below), as parking is scarce.
Nearby is the Ouasiemsca River, a tributary of the Mistassini.
It’s navigable and best suited to more experienced paddlers.
