Located in the southern part of the island of Montreal, the mountain has three peaks, or hills, depending on the source: to the north, the Outremont peak (211 m) – also known as Mount Murray; to the west, the Westmount peak (201 m); and to the east, the Mount Royal peak (233 m).
The latter is home to Mount Royal Park, one of Montreal’s largest green spaces, covering 190 hectares.
Inaugurated in 1876, Mount Royal Park is the work of Frederick Law Olmsted, designer emeritus of several great American parks, including New York’s Central Park.
The park’s extensive network of footpaths and stairways offers a variety of rural and wooded landscapes.
A wide variety of plants and birds can be observed.
What’s more, you’ll have access to magnificent belvederes offering breathtaking views of the city and the entire region.
Les amis de la montagne offer a variety of services and activities, including an exhibition at Smith House.
Kiosks and an interactive map offer capsules for discovering the beauty and riches of the park.
In winter, a complete equipment rental service for skating, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, tubing and more is available at Les amis de la montagne’s rental counter.
In 1535, on his second voyage, Jacques Cartier climbed the mountain he named Mount Royal in honor of the French king.
Following this visit, the island took the name of Mount Royal, which would eventually become Montreal. The Mount Royal Cross is a 31.4-metre-high metal cross erected in 1924 to crown the mountain.
It recalls a wooden cross planted here in 1643 by Paul Chomedey, a French officer and one of the founders, with Jeanne Mance, of the city of Montreal and its first governor.
