The Pointe-Yamachiche conservation site in the municipality of Yamachiche has been designated by the World Wildlife Fund and Nature Québec/UQCN as a site of importance for biodiversity, featuring a variety of ecosystems: wet meadow, mature forest, open environment and delta.
The river banks, composed of silt and clay, are prone to severe erosion and landslides during periods of high water.
During the spring season, the area is heavily affected by flooding, and a large part of the point is submerged.
A dirt road, once accessible by motorized vehicle, leads along the Yamachiche River to the sandy mouth of Lac Saint-Pierre.
A 576-metre footbridge on stilts allows visitors to explore the site without getting their feet wet.
There are two observation points and interpretation panels.
The site is well known to birdwatchers.
Two-thirds of the 300 species that regularly visit Quebec can be found here.
At least a hundred bird species are observed here every year, including some of precarious status.
Waterfowl hunters also visit in autumn, and ice-fishing enthusiasts in winter.
