Since 1984, five years after its creation, the park has been managed by the towns of Saint-Jean-de-Matha, Sainte-Béatrix and Sainte-Mélanie.
Its 300-hectare territory straddles these three municipalities.
Through forest and mountain, the tumultuous Rivière l’Assomption stirs the waters at the mouth of the Rivière Noire.
There are 3 waterfalls, streams and several cascades.
First there’s the impressive Monte-à-Peine Falls, then the more intimate Desjardins Falls, followed by the rocky Dalles Falls and a 30-metre canyon shaped by glaciers millions of years ago.
Some of the 18 km of trails run alongside the Rivière l’Assomption, which can be crossed by one of the three bridges overhanging it.
There are 6 lookouts offering a variety of viewpoints.
The 1.8 km nature trail features 18 panels providing information on wildlife shelters, trees, climate and more.
Foxes, coyotes, weasels, white-tailed deer and over 90 species of birds can be observed.
The beauty of the area led the director of the soap opera “Les Belles Histoires des pays d’en haut” to film scenes here in the 1960s.
