Berceau du Canada historic site

Cradle of Canada site and South-West Basin in downtown Gaspé

The Berceau du Canada Historic Site is located on Pointe O’Hara in Gaspé. Opened in 2012, this site is of great historical importance. Legend has it that Jacques Cartier planted a cross here in July 1534 to mark the taking of possession of Canada on behalf of the King of France.

The site offers a reconstruction of the heart of the Gaspé village as it was in the early 20th century. There are several reconstructed historic buildings, including the Baker tavern, a wigwam in memory of the Micmacs (the region’s first inhabitants), and the 19th-century Horatio LeBoutillier house. The Gaspé cross, carved in Rivière-à-Pierre and integrated into the site after its removal, is also an emblematic element. With its interpretive panels on the history and heritage of Gaspé, the Site Berceau du Canada has become a must-see for visitors in search of history and culture.

In summer, from June 24 to September 4, York Expédition offers watercraft rentals: canoes, kayaks, pedal boats and paddleboards. You can enjoy the exceptional waters of the Bassin du Sud-Ouest right in downtown Gaspé.
