About 85 km east of Sept-Îles and 35 km from Rivière-au-Tonnerre, a stopover is a must. Visit the waterfalls, including one of the most spectacular at 35 metres high. Easily accessible, two trails through the boreal forest on either side of the Manitou River offer a variety of viewpoints.
The first trail, on the east side, begins with a gravelled section of almost 250 metres, with no steps, which leads to a lookout point where you can admire the waterfalls. The trail continues on boardwalks and stairs for a 50-metre difference in height, for around 450 metres of descent. This is where you can discover the impressive Manitou Falls.
The second trail runs along the west side of the river. Less frequented, it nevertheless offers other interesting views of the falls and cascades.
Access
The trails are accessible from the Minganie tourist information office. On site, you’ll find a tourist information service, ample parking and picnic tables. To access the east trail, walk 300 m along Route 138 and cross the Manitou River bridge. The west trail begins near the parking lot.
The Montagnais (Innu) give a name to every living thing, because for them, every form of life has a spirit. Manitou would be the name of a God or animal spirit protecting this river.
