Quebec’s longest walking trail project turns 20 this year!
Sponsored since 1984 by the Fédération québécoise de la marche, the first section was inaugurated in 1990 in the Lanaudière region. Today, 20 years later, almost 1,000 km – or 60% of its total length – are already accessible.
With a potential length of 1,600 km, and as part of a Canada-wide project, the National Trail is the longest continuous hiking, snowshoeing and Nordic skiing trail in Quebec (not to be confused with the Trans Canada Trail). The challenge is to connect existing hiking trails to cross the province from west to east, covering eight of Quebec’s tourist regions. The Gaspésie region will eventually be added to link the National Trail in the Bas-Saint-Laurent with the International Appalachian Trail.
