Located some 30 kilometers southeast of Maniwaki, the Érablière-du-Trente-et-Un-Milles ecological reserve covers an area of 606 hectares, west of Baie Matte, on Lac des Trente et Un Milles.
The site protects ecosystems representative of the deciduous forest of the Lac Simon ecological region, which belongs to the yellow birch maple forest domain.
The Lac des Trente et Un Milles area is part of the highlands of the Canadian Shield.
The rocks are mainly calc-silicate, limestone and dolomitic.
These rock formations are often perforated by caves, and their dissolution is responsible for the alkalinity of the waters of several lakes.
The soils, of the Brunisol and Podzol types, are excessively rocky and well-drained, with rock often outcropping.
The main plant groups in the ecological reserve are yellow birch sugar maple (climatic climax of the region), yellow birch-lime maple, white osier maple, red oak, red oak white pine and hemlock.
Wildlife includes moose, white-tailed deer and ruffed grouse.
The marsh at the outlet of Baie Matte is an important waterfowl habitat.
