This 27.3-km section of the national trail runs through the municipalities of Notre-Dame-de-la-Merci, parking at the first Lac des Castors, and St-Côme, parking on Chemin du Lac Clair. It can also be accessed from the Val St-Côme ski resort, 20 minutes north of its summit.
The Contreforts trail crosses different forest strata such as white birch fir and coniferous forest. It is characterized by a succession of ascents and descents. You’ll pass several escarpments and ridges leading to peaks up to 600 metres in altitude, with many viewpoints.
On the Notre-Dame-de-la-Merci side, the trail skirts around the Lac Blanc cliff and gives access to several other small lakes. From the east, the trail climbs up the mountain, from where you can see the road in the valley, Montagne du Tranchant and, through the branches, Lac Clair.
Access West
From Notre-Dame-de-la-Merci, follow route 347 north (chemin Notre-Dame-de-la-Merci) for about 7 km. Just after crossing the Ouareau River, turn right onto chemin Saint-Côme. The parking lot is on the left, about 1.5 km down the road.
East access
From Saint-Côme, take rang Versailles (route 347), then route du Lac-Clair for some 2 km. It’s a few metres before the access to Montagne du Tranchant and sentier Swaggin.
